First days require flexibility, adjustment on everyone's part; but especially, setting the goals for learning and basic rule setting. The learning focus of the first day was to teach the basic four principles of peace-building--think it out, talk it out, work it out, live it out--with a clear distinction on the difference in peace-making and peace-breaking. Different art-making experiences helped to reinforce this more "didactic" approach for the first two days.
Musician and teacher Gerald Bennett reinforces the learning with an A4P theme song "Metaphor" and having the students write lyrics to "Rights and Responsibilities.
Aleea Slappy helps a small group take the text for rights and responsibility and write into rappable phrases.
Students also created symbols of conflict in order to understand the nature of conflict.
